The last of the Southern Group islands to swear in their Island Council did so in true island style, according to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.

On Tuesday, Mitiaro enua gathered in the island meeting hall and celebrated the swearing in of their newly elected mayor and council members in front of their Justice of the Peace Julian Aupuni.

Tati Tutaka was sworn in as the new mayor alongside councillor for Atai – Tokai Ngaiorae, councillor for Takaue – Toa Inatea, councillor for Mangarei –Maarametua Kimiora, councillor for Auta – Brandon Kaukura and Aronga Mana representative – Tuainepatira Ngametua.

The ceremony was attended by Maara Tetava Ariki as well as Member of Parliament Tuakeu Tangatapoto and the executive officer Anna Roi, to witness and join the support team from the Office of the Prime Minister in the council orientation after the ceremony.

“The whole island was present to observe the process and were on hand to congratulate their new Mayor Tati Tutaka, who replaces former Mayor Makara Murare,” the statement said.

“Family and friends then gathered around to wish each of the members best of luck for the next four years as they all took in the formalities conducted that morning.”

Mitiaro completes the Southern Group islands, Manihiki being the first of the Northern group having been completed.

All island councils have undergone orientation with the Pa Enua Division of the Office of the Prime Minister and will continue to offer support to strengthen joint partnerships with their respective Island Administrations also, the statement adds.
