Solomone Taufahema, who was in custody for a charge of common assault, was granted bail by Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro at the Criminal Court in Avarua on Thursday.

Taufahema faces a charge of joint burglary and was represented by defence lawyer Michelle Tangimama.

A week ago, Tangimama made applications for bail, however it was denied, giving time for police to speak to the defendant’s father, who had provided a letter requesting for the release of his son.

Taufahema’s father, who is paralysed, is believed to be the victim in this case.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Fairoa Tararo did not oppose bail, advising the Court that police have checked with the defendant’s father.

Taufahema was granted bail with strict conditions of 7pm to 7am curfew, to reside in Titikaveka, not to offer violence, not to purchase or consume alcohol and not to enter any liquor licence premises such as bars and nightclubs.

The matter has been adjourned to November 28 where pleas are expected to be entered.

The case of a man who is accused of assaulting a police officer has been adjourned to October 31.

Defence lawyer Mark Short advised the Court that he would like the case of Morey Vati, who faces two counts of assault on a police officer, adjourned to review police disclosures.

Short said last week that his client would enter a plea in the next adjournment, but now he has found some issues in the disclosures that they need to review.

Vati is accused of assaulting two police officers in Matavera on June 21 of this year.

Brendon Crummer has denied the charge of assaulting a female.

Crummer, who did not have a lawyer, appeared before Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro at the Criminal Court on Thursday.

It is alleged that Crummer assaulted a female in Titikaveka on August 30. Details on the charge were not revealed.

The matter has been adjourned to February 4 next year for a defence hearing.

Peter Chan Kureta, who is facing a charge of assault on a female, had his case adjourned to October 31, after a letter of withdrawal from the victim was provided to the Court.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Fairoa Tararo said police would also like to speak to the defendant about the case and other issues related to the matter.

Kureta is on bail on the conditions not to purchase or consume alcohol and not to enter liquor licence premises.
