Courts briefs
Cook Islands High Court. LOSIRENE LACANIVALU/24050916

Justice of the Peace Nadine Newnham presided over driving-related matters and a single wilful damage matter involving the Mangaia hostel yesterday.

Jordan Arona Elizabeth Ata-Ariki Glover appeared for a charge of wilful damage. It was alleged that on July 31 at Tupapa, the defendant was warned by the caretaker to leave the Mangaia Hostel area.

JP Newnham adjourned the matter to September 5 allowing Glover time to seek legal advice/a lawyer.

Glover is on bail with the conditions not to enter the Mangaia Hostel premises and not to make contact or attempt to contact the complainant.

A man whose excess blood alcohol case had been adjourned since March while he sought legal aid assistance was advised by the court to contact the court registrar immediately after being called.

JP Newnham told Dominic Matapo John that the Court has not received any application from him seeking legal aid assistance.

However, Matapo said that he applied.

JP Newnham said the matter had been adjourned since March because the application had not been received by the Court, and there was no record of it on file.

She advised that he make contact with the court registrar to locate his application or submit a new one.

The matter was adjourned to October 3.

In another driving related matter, a bench warrant was issued for Hiwi Wuatai for not appearing. He faces a charge of careless driving causing injury.

Meanwhile, Ross McLauchlan, allegedly involved in careless driving on Arorangi main road on July 15, was given time to get a lawyer.

No plea was taken and the matter was adjourned to September 5.
