Fijian national Kevueli Koroinavunisinu (Koroi) was admitted to the hospital when he fell ill on Friday morning and despite thorough tests and examinations, the medical team could not identify any underlying issues.
He was placed under observation, given a drip, and provided with pain relief but unfortunately, he passed away early Saturday morning.
Marcus Niszow, chief executive of Pacific Resort Hotel Group, reminisced on Koroi’s journey in the Cook Islands through Pacific Resort when he started work at the Resort in April 2019.
A heartfelt memorial service was held on Tuesday to commemorate Koroi’s life with a diverse crowd of locals, Fijians, Filipinos and Indonesians, reflecting the wide range of people touched by his life.
A traditional Fijian service was arranged by the Cook Islands Fijian Association, held last night, for the public to pay their final respects before his body will be transported back to Fiji to be laid to rest.
According to Niszow, eulogies highlighted his kindness, humility and the significant impact he had on those around him.
“Koroi had a colourful and cheerful character, known for his extraordinary kindness, humility and loving spirit,” Niszow said.
“Despite being a reserved person, he had a deep love and care for those close to him and was always consistent and reliable in his work. His gentle nature and reputation for having the biggest heart left a lasting impression on his colleagues and the community.”
Niszow says Koroi’s presence will be deeply missed by his co-workers and all who knew him.
“His legacy of kindness and dedication will continue to inspire us.”
Pacific Resort is covering all costs associated with his repatriation to Fiji including the cost of another Fijian staff member to return his body to the family in Fiji, ensuring he is honoured in accordance with Fijian cultural protocols.
“Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time,” Niszow added.
The late Koroi was employed in the grounds department throughout his tenure at Pacific Resort Rarotonga.
“The one lesson that Koroi’s Pacific Resort family have learned from his time at the resort is the importance of embodying love and compassion in all interactions,” Niszow said.
“Koroi consistently demonstrated these values, regardless of cultural, lifestyle, or language differences, setting an example for everyone.”
