The second round of the Cook Islands Rugby Union Rarotonga Club 15s competition promises to be a cracker as the undefeated Avatiu Nikao Eels take on defending champions Tupapa Panthers at Teimurimotia Park this afternoon.

Titikaveka Bulldogs shocked Arorangi Bears in the first match of round two yesterday afternoon at the “Kennel”.

The last time these two teams met this season in round one, the Bears won by 45-17. However, the resurgent Bulldogs, who lost all three matches in round one, have shown significant improvement, defeating the Bears 21-19 at home.

Yesterday’s closely contested clash between the neighbours set the stage for another intense derby to be played this afternoon.

The highly anticipated clash between the premier giants Panthers and the Eels will kick off at 4pm.

This match is expected to be one of the season’s highlights. The Panthers, the 2023 champions, have faced two defeats this season – 13-16 against the Eels in week one and 3-13 against Arorangi Bears.

The pressure will be on the Panthers to secure a win and restore confidence as the season progresses.

The previous match between the Panthers and the Eels played on July 6 was a thrilling encounter, with the Eels narrowly winning 16-13. The scores were tied at 7-all, 10-all, and 13-all, but the reliable goal-kicking of Eels’ first five eighth Viiga Reupena made the difference.

For the Eels, the loose forward pairing of Li Ponini and Tamanui Nicholas will be pivotal in both attack and defence. The Panthers will rely on strong running midfielders Fereti Anau and Tua Ravula to lead them against the Eels.

The weekend’s schedule also includes several junior and women’s matches at Titikaveka Field, showcasing the depth of talent in local rugby.

The Women’s Rugby 10s match between the Bears and the Panthers at 1pm promises to be an exciting contest. Women’s rugby has been growing in popularity and skill, and this match will showcase the talent and determination of female rugby players in the region. The Bears and Panthers have both shown strong performances, and this match will be a great opportunity to see them in action.

Junior matches will also provide a platform for young players to display their skills and passion for the game. The U12, U14, U16 and U19 matches between the Bears and the Eels will highlight the future stars of local rugby.
