Infrastructure Cook Islands (ICI) has no plans to construct footpaths or additional car parks in the Muri 30 kilometre/hour zone.

Secretary of ICI, Elizabeth Wright-Koteka said: “Due to budgetary pressures and landowner issues, ICI does not plan to construct footpaths or additional car parks in this area in the foreseeable future.”

However, she acknowledged that parking can be a challenge in this zone, which is considered the island’s tourism hub.

Wright-Koteka says this area is usually congested especially during the Muri night market and there is a challenge to find space for parking.

“In an area where space for parking is challenging, people are asked to be sensible, considerate and patient when using the Muri stretch of road.”

Wright-Koteka said that the recent road works had provided more road shoulders to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and parking on the asphalt (hotmix) sealed roads.

“People in the area and travelling through Muri are reminded that this is a 30 km/hr stretch of road and that compliance with the speed limit will assist with safety.”
