Cook Islands Police hope to see another quiet weekend in terms of road accidents especially alcohol related crashes.

Police strategic and media officer Trevor Pitt says they hope to see abstaining from drinking and driving.

However, he said there is still too much carelessness and disregard for others on the road, including speeding.  

Pitt said: “Careless driving is the main cause of crashes on Rarotonga with little evidence of improvement, despite the high number of incidents.”

Pitt made this comment after police were called to attend a crash scene at 1.21pm outside Oasis in Nikao yesterday.

He said a 55-year-old female driver of a blue Toyota car went onto the road from Oasis and collided with a motorbike.  

Pitt said no information was available about the motorcyclist who was traveling towards Arorangi from town. However, they were able to determine that the motorcycle was a rental.

He also reported a serious crash involving two cars that occurred at 1.33 pm on Wednesday near the Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC) in Titikaveka.

Pitt said the victim age 53 was driving a white Toyota rental and the alleged offender age 38 was in a silver Toyota.

He said blood sample was sought for analysis.
