In recognition of their enthusiasm and skills, primary school drummers who participated in the CITC Pump the Beats’ Emo’anga Tangi Ka’ara 2024 competition have received tokens of appreciation certificates from CITC – sponsors of the annual competitive event.

Apii Avarua drummers were “excited” to receive their certificates yesterday morning from George George, CITC brand manager, and Esther Heather, the company’s marketing and advertising co-ordinator.

“We are pleased that Apii Avarua through their teachers and tutor Steven Hiro have done a great job for our talented kids in encouraging them in our culture,” said George George.

Cleveland Ngavii, lead drummer for Apii Avarua, said his family inspired him to join the Tangi Ka’ara drumming lessons for the first time last year.

“I love culture and some of my families are in culture so I wanted to be like them,” said Ngavii.

“When we won, I felt proud of our boys for not being nervous – for being confident.

“I won’t forget it and I want to continue and I hope our boys will do. And thank you to our school and tutor Mr Hiro.”

Tangi Ka’ara tutor Steven Hiro started drumming on his home island of Manihiki.

But when he moved to Rarotonga 15 years ago, his drumming experience came to a standstill.

He got back to drumming three years ago, his first year helping out Apii Avarua.

“It is interesting, to be honest,” said Hiro. “Every year each group has its own attitude and character.”

“Some teams have different levels of skills and techniques, and every year their qualities and features change.”

Te Apii Avarua Tangi Ka’ara 2024 team are: Tutor – Steven Hiro; Drummers – Cleveland Ngavii, Justice Siona, Ngametua Matangaro, Ngapoe Urirau, Luka Newbigging, Jayden Angene, Joshua Sherwin, Nyjah Atuatika, Akatauira Tapena, William Tou.
