A New Zealand DJ (disc jockey) who was arrested on September 6 last year for bringing cocaine and cannabis to Rarotonga has been convicted after pleading guilty to all charges.

William Anthony Dave, 44, arrived in Rarotonga on an Air New Zealand flight. Upon arrival, authorities at Rarotonga Airport noticed a container of protein powder during customs processing. Dave had declared the powder to be for a friend.

Represented by defence lawyer Mark Short, Dave admitted to importing and possession for supply of Class A drugs – cocaine, possession and importation of Class C drugs – cannabis, and false declaration.

Crown Law senior prosecutor Jamie Crawford told Chief Justice Patrick Keane, who appeared via an audio-visual link at the High Court in Rarotonga on Friday, that zip lock bags containing cocaine, cannabis and blue pills were found.

Crawford said the defendant had refused to make a statement when interviewed by police.

The matter has been adjourned for sentencing and the date is to be confirmed by the court registrar.

Dave continues to be on bail on the conditions he is not to leave the Cook Islands without the approval of the High Court, to reside in Arorangi, and to follow curfew from 7pm-7am.
