Last week, Atiu students collected coconuts to extract the husk for one of Papa’s purple orchid gardens.
The inside of the coconut was given to a local mama to make coconut cream.
According to AKTT, the senior students are teaching the junior students how to husk a coconut.
This Easter, the Kōrero o te ‘Ōrau’s Atiu youth group will be hosting a fishing competition as part of the 2024 youth programme.
AKTT Atiu leader Joshua Jim says the fishing competition is about learning life skills and teaching the local knowledge of fishing.
The competition will feature youth alongside adults.
This is the first time AKTT Atiu will be hosting the fishing competition.
Jim said the Atiu Fishing Competition would give them an opportunity to encourage the participation of youth groups and for the older generation to support the youths.
With more than 80 youth part of the group, Jim said the event is open to all ages.
The fishing competition will be held on Easter Monday, April 1 from 7am with a presentation at 6pm.
