Letter: Cannabis laws

I’m publicly asking the Prime Minister Mark Brown to make use of his power as our top elected official to live up to the promise and grant a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all our people who are still being subjected to this day to the brutal, barbaric and laws on marijuana.

Enough is enough. The PM must put an end to the harm these zealots in our criminal justice system are inflicting on marijuana users and sellers, whose perverse actions are in direct conflict with the norms and values we hold so dear to us – justice, freedom, respect, community and responsibility.

Right now, the criminal justice system is still hunting down our beautiful people who are providing a great service to this nation with the supply of medicinal and recreational marijuana with surveillance and arrest, to trial and conviction to incarceration.

The laws on marijuana in this nation have crushed many souls and countless futures while spreading intolerable levels of disgust, mistrust and dysfunction in our society.

The radicals in our criminal justice system try to vilify and demonise marijuana consumers but the opposite is happening when they wreak havoc on our society with the injury, hurt, pain and suffering that they cause. How dare they

By expunging harmful convictions for marijuana, the PM could put an end to our persecution and let the healing process begin.

Editor’s note – The Narcotics and Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill 2023, passed in December last year, allows any person prescribed a controlled drug by an overseas medicinal practitioner to import or possess the drug, and administer it to themselves. It also allows anyone having the care of a patient by whom a controlled drug is imported, to administer the drug to the patient in accordance with prescription. Those using medicinal cannabis are required to keep evidence on them that it is prescribed by an overseas practitioner and keep it in the original packaging. Cannabis remains illegal for recreational purposes.
