A 41-year-old visitor from New Zealand was ordered to pay a fine of $220 for his drunk and disorderly behaviour on a resort premises.

Jason Cohen appeared before Justice of the Peace Georgina Williams on charges of drunk in a public place and indecent and obscene language in a public place.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Fairoa Tararo stated that on December 31, 2023, at around 1:50am, police received a call from The Edgewater Resort regarding the defendant disturbing guests and swearing.

Sergeant Tararo said that when police arrived, Cohen was swearing and shouting, using abusive language towards the security officer.

He noted that Cohen smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and refused to make a statement.

Police had earlier reported that Cohen was continually abusive and was remanded into custody in the early hours of Sunday.

In mitigation, Cohen claimed not to remember arguing with anyone and felt bullied by the security staff. He represented himself and admitted to the charges, suggesting that the way things were handled escalated the situation.

However, Justice of the Peace Williams noted that Cohen’s partner had confirmed his behaviour and intoxication.

She reminded him that each charge carried a potential penalty of either a fine or imprisonment for a month.

Cohen was ordered to pay the $220 fine by the end of the day and before leaving the Cook Islands. His passport will be released upon confirmation of fine payment.
