Cook Islands weightlifter Tehei Napa finished in fifth place in the 55-kilogram division at the Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

This was Napa’s first international competition, and she managed a respectable finish from nine competitors.

Coach Luisa Peters said Napa did well considering this was her first international competition and she was competing in a tough category.

“Because in that category you have a Commonwealth Games medallist. And you have girls who have medalled at the last Pacific Games, so they have been on it for five plus years,” Peters said.

“So Tehei is quite new to the sport, but yeah, she did good. She’s only been training for a year. And after a year with those results it’s pretty good.”

Meanwhile, Jerome Tura will be competing today (Wednesday, Solomon Islands time at 3.30pm) in the 89kg division.

Meanwhile the Cook Islands women’s basketball team maintained their unbeaten run at the Pacific Games beating Papua New Guinea 59-37 on Sunday. In their first match, the national side thumped Tonga 76-44. Last night they played Tahiti, who also won both their matches, in their final pool match.
