A 24-year-old man has been released from custody and has appeared in the Criminal Court on a charge of breaching a police safety order.

Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro granted a suppression request from Police relating to the alleged victim and witnesses.

The court heard the defendant is represented by lawyer Mark Short who could not attend on Monday.

Police did not seek a further remand into custody, but asked that the defendant be released with conditions.

JP Taoro released the defendant on the grounds he did not contact or interfere with the victim or witnesses, as per the police safety order.

That included no physical, verbal or electronic contact.

He was told to stay at least 100 metres away from the victim.

JP Taoro told him not to leave the Cook Islands without permission from the High Court, surrender his passport, and not offer any violence.

Suppression was granted for the victim and witnesses, and the matter was adjourned to November 9.
