In a global effort to raise awareness on breast cancer, October has been designated as Pink Month. During this time, there are efforts to educate the public about the disease, including early identification and the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

The Cook Islands Breast Cancer Foundation, supported by ANZ, set up a stall in front of the bank yesterday to sell merchandise and raise awareness about breast cancer and promote Pink Ribbon Day.

Dawn Baudinet, president of the Breast Cancer Foundation, said: “Our booth was very lively in the morning since we first set up at 8:30am.”

“Some people still don’t know the reason for Pink Ribbon Day, which is all about remembering those who have passed away from breast cancer and those struggling with it or recovering from the disease today.”

Myra Tatakura, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, said: “Early detection is key. Have your mammogram check-up, do your self-examination, and get your pap smear done.”

Every year in October, the Foundation sets up booths around town and hosts activities.

Look out for their pink booth at the Punanga Nui market today and remaining Saturdays in October. The women will also be at BSP bank next Friday.

ANZ bank has been and continues to be a strong supporter of the Foundation. Their staff also held a fundraising sausage sizzle stall alongside the Foundation.
