Cook Islands and the Fiji Community’s team spirit at the inaugural Men’s Netball Competition 2023 has been acknowledged by Netball Cook Islands.

NCI secretary Tekura Moeka’a said the first day of the competition on Thursday was an exhilarating start for Men's Netball.

“It wasn't dampened by the cold - great vibes all evening - especially great to see the community support from both Cook Islands and Fiji,” she said.

Moeka’a said given that it was the first day, there were some nerves heading onto the court for all teams.

“It was great to see both young and experienced players.”

She said it was also great to see the likes of Tupe Tamatoa and Tupa Tupa coming together to put in their respective teams for the competition. 

Shine on Fiji Club Captain Shakira Taleaua thanked Netball Cook Islands for allowing team Fiji to participate. 

“I cannot contain my excitement and gratitude as I express how much Shine on Fiji appreciates the incredible opportunity provided by NCI. This is a massive chance for us to showcase our talents and represent our beloved Island home, Fiji.

“With our demanding work schedules, it is rare for us to come together like this, but this opportunity has allowed us to unite as friends and family and enjoy the game that we love. I want to give a huge shout out and credits to all the players who have stepped up to represent Fiji.

“But it's not just the players who deserve recognition; our supporters also play a crucial role in making these games memorable. So, thumbs up to the Fijian community in Rarotonga! Without your cheers and encouragement, this game would not be as exciting and thrilling.”

Taleaua said what makes this experience even more special is that despite any ethnic differences, they come together and speak a common language through sports.

Taleaua said the competition has boosted their spirits and drawn them closer to home reminding them of the district / social / business netball games back in Fiji.

“We hope to see more of our community members in the coming weeks to support not only our players but Netball in the Cook Islands.”

Meanwhile, Moeka’a said the tournament is also an opportunity for those who are wanting to umpire or learn to umpire or be a bench official.

“We have experienced players Ngere Puia-Fraser assisting on the umpires corner and Autiare Luke with both umpires and bench officials.”

She added that now that the first game nerves are out, they look forward to the next 6 weeks - for some more fast paced and agile netball.
