A Justice of the Peace has expressed surprise at one man’s sudden spate of offending.

Tutai Junior Amiri appeared before Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro at the Criminal Court in Avarua on Thursday.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of contempt of court for an incident in May.

However, JP Taoro noted he had two other charges of contempt of court, and two charges of driving with excess breath alcohol.

All five of the charges occurred within the past two months. He has pleaded guilty to all of them.

Amiri’s father spoke in support, saying that Amiri acknowledged the offending. Amiri’s father recommended taking away Amiri’s driver’s licence.

JP Taoro told Amiri: “I’m amazed at the amount of offending you’ve done recently”.

“You’ve been through the court system a few times, but from 2020 to 2023, it was a quiet period for you,” she said.

“All of a sudden you’re appearing again.”

Amiri was remanded on bail.

JP Taoro adjourned the matter to June 1, where Amiri will be sentenced on all five charges.
