Despite the unpleasant and moderate wind conditions of about 16 knots over the weekend, the fishermen competing in the Cook Islands Games Fishing Club Weighmasters competition reeled in good catch on Saturday.

The number of boats that landed fish and the amount caught were better than last month’s fishing competition, the officials said.

Thirty-three boats registered for the Cook Islands Game Fishing Club Weighmasters competition over the weekend, 76 fish were weighed in resulting in a total catch of 538 kilograms.

The Fishing Club’s weighmaster Gaven Henderson said: “All in all I think it worked out well considering the weather we’ve had over the last few weeks.”

“We weighed in more fish than the BSP competition held last month.”

Skipper Boof Mare, angler Tiaki Charlie and deckhand Teriiahoroa Framhein on boat Akura Fishing Charters Rarotonga, weighed in the winning 46.1kg yellowfin tuna.

Framhein said the fish was hooked about 10.30 that morning and it took a robust 35 minute fight to land the yellowfin tuna.

The fishermen also reeled in three small yellowfin tuna and a skipjack.

“We had a good day and weighing in the heaviest fish for the competition was bonus,” said Framhein.

Results

Results for the Heaviest fish are: Boof Mere on Akura - 46.1kg yellowfin tuna, 2^nd Irakau William on Ruby - 15.0kg yellowfin tuna, 3^rd Tione William on Velani - 14.4kg mahi mahi.

Heaviest Aggregate: 1^st Paku Poila on Manakia 3 with 106.5kg, 2^nd Nga Katukee on 3 sons with 95.2kg, 3^rd Tepki Baxter on Magken with 46.4kg.

The ‘mystery’ weight winner was 4.6kg won by Tepaki Baxter on Magken with a 4.6kg yellowfin tuna.
