A man facing a charge of assaulting a female has sought and been granted name suppression.

At Avarua on Thursday the Criminal Court heard the defendant allegedly assaulted a female in Ngatangiia on April 7 before the defendant interjected, telling the court the victim was present and had withdrawn the charge.

The police prosecutor said police had a no drop policy and certain things needed to be done, before requesting an adjournment.

Police would not agree to withdraw charges as the prosecutor needed authorisation.

The matter needed to be reviewed.

The defendant then said his occupation was high profile and requested name suppression.

Justice of the Peace Vania Kenning said she would allow suppression, but said suppression was a privilege and not a right.

While police looked into the matter the court would grant suppression, she said.

Police asked for bail conditions to include non-violence, no alcohol and not to enter licenced premises.

The defendant then said he was seeking counselling services from Friday next week.

JP Kenning said the matter could be dealt with at the next hearing.

The defendant was told not to consume alcohol, enter licenced premises, and not offer violence.

The matter was adjourned to May 11.
