The initiative was made possible through the wishes of Nelson Akava, who buried his mother Akepakari Teakauroa Melita Akava earlier this month, and the support of Minister George “Maggie” Angene.
“I thought to ask Minister Maggie for a solar light to put over my Mum’s grave,” said Akava.
“He said why one? Why not for the whole cemetery and here we are, now the whole cemetery will be lit up.
“I’m over the moon with this help from Minister Maggie, what a blessing. Let us live in the light.
“Thank you so much to Minister Maggie and his boys, it is a blessing.”
Minister Angene said: “When I drive by this area it’s always dark to me, and it should shine because it’s near the road and people’s families are buried here.”
“And on Turama night, Bishop (Paul Donoghue) needs light to bless the graves. Now there will be light here,” he added.
Akava would also like to thank Bishop Paul Donoghue and Carl Glassie for supporting the solar light project, and everyone who comforted and supported his families on the passing of their mother.
