Cops nabbed motorists on Rarotonga yesterday with 11 traffic infringements handed out by Tuesday afternoon.

This week, Cook Islands Police media spokesman Trevor Pitt said, a fresh Traffic Team has swung back into action, following a recent reassignment of frontline police officers. 

Pitt said the new line up is already making its presence felt around Rarotonga with traffic enforcement checks, utilising speed radar and monitoring vehicle compliance.

They were out in force in Muri on Tuesday, catching unsuspecting motorists in the 30km/h zone.  

He said in the first half of this financial year (2022/2023), the Traffic Team accounted for 75 per cent of the detected cases of drunk driving on Rarotonga.

Traffic Police also conducted 25 per cent of the arrests on the island over the same period. 

Last year, just between July and December, police issued 384 traffic fines.
