Incidents of reported theft in 2022 ended the year at half the total it was in 2015 and 65 per cent lower than that recorded in 2010, say Cook Islands Police.

Last year’s total was 126 (a second-equal low with 2020) while in 2010, Police recorded 356 reported cases.

According to Police: “The significant decline in reported cases is due to a range of issues, including better awareness around the security of valuable items such as phones and electronics, as well as cash.”

“There is also a degree of probability that some incidents go unreported. But overall, the pattern over the past 20+ years has been one of steady decline.”

Economic growth and increasing affluence have brought higher levels of travel and consumption of goods, police say.

“A greater sense of value now revolves around personal belongings, which can motivate better security measures and improved care.

“Unfortunately, casual attitudes lie below the surface and complacency often results in a sharp wake up call about the safety of the Rarotonga environment.  Leaving valuables and expensive property lying about, exposed to anyone lurking or passing by, is a risk not worth taking.  Wallets and purses, phones, speakers, brand clothing, and jewelry. Keep your items close, and supervised.  All the time.  Otherwise learn fast from the lessons incurred.”
