After pressing pause for more than two-and-a-half years, on September 1, 2022, Jehovah’s Witnesses returned to the work they are well known for, going door-to-door.

This decision to resume their door-to-door ministry marks the complete restoration of all pre-pandemic in-person activities for the more than 225 Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Cook Islands.

“The great support we had from volunteers on the September 1 was a demonstration of their keenness to get back to the door-to-door work.” Cook Island local Papa Junior Louis said in a statement. “I could not wait to start the door-to-door work again, to meet people in person and talk to them directly.”

Papa Greig Mose recently lost his wife to Covid and has been battling cancer for many years. For Papa Mose, going door-to-door has helped him overcome his feelings of grief and combat the challenges of his illness.

“I try not to think of my sickness and I always look forward to meeting people, it’s a privilege.”

Many are already experiencing positive reactions from the Cook Islands community.

Local volunteer Juanita-Louisa Karora said: “There is a very welcoming atmosphere amongst our community here in Rarotonga.”

“Warm hospitality is a normal part of our culture, and I felt that when we were talking to people face-to-face again. Many even welcomed us into their home and allowed us to share an upbuilding thought from the Bible. They are happy for us to return and continue our positive discussions.”

Aitutaki resident Mama Piri Iopu struggles with bad back pain and ongoing health issues. Despite all of this, she says she loves taking part and has done so for many years. “This work is very important in my life. One lady who I study the Bible regularly with comments each time I return ‘I am so happy you people are back, we have missed you’.”

“We are hearing of encouraging experiences,” conveys Papa Junior Louis. “In the first couple of days, already there has been a good response from householders. One agreed to a Bible study on the second day of our return. I believe we will hear of further positive comments in the days ahead.”

During the pandemic, the Witnesses developed an interactive Bible study programme available in hundreds of languages. They will offer this free programme to the community as they visit people at their homes this month.

Victor Ioramo, the spokesperson for Cook Islands, said: “Even though we have enjoyed a productive two-and-a-half years writing letters and making phone calls, our primary method of reaching our neighbours is by going door-to-door. We look forward to having meaningful in-person conversations with our neighbours about the Bible and the hope it offers.”
