Mohawks, hair dye, glitter and wigs, all played a role in Apii Te Uki Ou’s annual Wacky Hair and Wheels Day.

Apii Te Uki Ou principal principal Carly Ave said the message for Friday was to “have fun and go hard”.

“I am so happy that we could do it because lots of our normal annual events at the start of the year were put off because of Covid restrictions,” Ave said.

“It’s a little bit late for the first big event of the year but even if it was raining we were going to try and get it on because the kids were really looking forward to it.”

Ave said the Wacky Hair day and the school’s gala were the events the students looked forward to most each year.

The school’s fields were transformed into a bike track, while its concrete areas were used for kick scooters, rollerblades and skateboards.

“We’re here just to let the kids challenge themselves to try on the wheels. The roads are busy, they don’t get that much opportunity to get out.”

Ave said it was nice to see children of different ages helping each other out with their wheels.

She gave special thanks to the families of the children who created the hairstyles.

The school was established in 1993 by a group of dedicated parents who shared a vision to create a school environment where every child had the opportunity to develop and grow to the very best of their ability; academically, socially and physically.
