Two people have had their drivers’ licence cancelled for a year after being caught driving with excess breath alcohol at police checkpoints.

Kevin Leslie Scott appeared in Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol after being stopped at a checkpoint near Nikao about 7.50pm on June 18, 2022.

He blew 370mcg of alcohol per litre of breath. The limit is 250mcg. He subsequently told the police he had drunk four small bottles of beer before getting into the vehicle to drive home.

Justice of the Peace John Whitta disqualified him from owning a driver’s licence in the Cook Islands for 12 months, and fined him $250.

Sharlyn Mae Penconcillo also pleaded guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol, after being stopped at a checkpoint in Avarua on June 19, 2022.

She blew 660mcg of alcohol per litre of breath and subsequently admitted to the police that she had drunk tequila and four bottles of beer before driving into town.

JP Whitta convicted her and disqualified from owning a driver’s licence in the Cook Islands for 12 months, and fined her $500.
