Husband and wife pair Matheus Batlajeri, pictured, and Lea Rachel Fatbinan are among some international players taking part in the Oceania Masters in Paradise 2022.

The team tournament got underway yesterday morning at the National Sports Arena in Nikao.

Batlajeri, 73, and Fatbinan, 74, the oldest pair in the event, showed no signs of slowing down when they took on their younger opponents in the mixed doubles match in round one.

“I have been playing badminton for over 12 to 13 years. We are from New Zealand and we love playing badminton together. We are originally from Indonesia, grown up and educated in Holland and emigrated to New Zealand,” Batlajeri said.

“Competing here is like a holiday for us, it’s warm and nice here and we also enjoy playing and meeting with other people especially Cook Islanders.

“We have no problem playing against younger people. Age is taking a bit of toll on me but I’m not letting it get to me.”

Batlajeri’s advice to young Cook Islands players is not let distractions get in your way. “Focus on badminton and also look at senior players to learn the skills and always have confidence.”

The tournament continues today at the Sports Arena.
