The National Masters Mixed Pairs Bowls Championship was held for the second time and a winner was announced on Wednesday last week.

Thirty-two teams competed in the tournament which is double last year's 16 teams.   

The event ran over a two-week period and was open to anybody over the age of 45.

Cook Islands Bowls member Jason Lindsay said he was happy to see continued growth in the sport.

“Although we have a huge focus on youth development, this is a great tournament which focuses on the generation of players who helped set the foundation of lawn bowls in the Cook Islands and allows for them to have a competitive event amongst each other,” Lindsay said.

In first place for the main event was Papatua Papatua and Monique Yates from Rarotonga Bowling Club.

In second was Porea Elisa and Ripa Tauira from Pukapuka Bowling Club.

In third was Rick Hickling and Marie Melvin from Palmerston Bowling Club.

For the plate event, Daniel Webb and Linda Tera from Aitutaki Bowling Club came in first.

Tukai Engu and Matapa Puia from Composite team came in second.

In third place was Nooroa Daniel and Tere Daniel from Atiu Bowling Club.

The next national event, the Cook Islands Bowls National Triples Chamships, got underway yesterday.   

“This is our last national event before the focus turns to the complete preparation of the National team who will travel to the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in July,” Lindsay said.
