A new food-delivery service has taken off in Rarotonga.

Known as Uber Kai, it began operating last Wednesday providing an exciting new option for locals and overseas visitors to choose how, when, and where to collect their food from.

Run by a small team of six, it targets local residents and visitors who are in isolation and quarantine, but also those that simply can’t find the time to get the necessities they need at home.

“We have had a good response since we launched, says Uber Kai founder, Sharna Matapuku. “This is literally our second week in operation.

“With the numbers picking up for Covid we decided to come together, to ensure people had everything they needed to feel comfortable whilst in isolation and quarantine.

“But, it was also about providing jobs and helping the average family with something they have to do every day.

“And helping people eat what they like, where they like, all at the tap of a few buttons.”

According to Matapuku, how Uber Kai’s service works is that customers can order the food they want from the eateries they want online via their Facebook page, and make payment via bank transfer into their bank account.

Once that’s done, customers then send a screenshot as proof of payment along with directions to their location.

Shortly after, their food is dropped off at “island speed” within a certain time frame.    

Matapuku shares that food posts and grocery posts are also posted daily to their Facebook page, and all customers have to do is send through their orders.

However, if you request something that’s not posted on their page, the company can also arrange that for you too.

All items are posted online along with their dollar value, along with a delivery charge which has three set rates depending on your location.

Local resident Doris Williams who has ordered twice from Uber Kai said: “For someone like me, stuck in iso, and who won’t rely on my family as they are so busy with work, Uber Kai is the go-to place. So far I’ve placed my order with them twice and I’ve got all my meals on time.

“Just tell Uber Kai what you want, where you want it from, pay and they do the rest!”
