The new standing orders - the official rules that will regulate the proceedings in parliament - will be made into plain, gender-neutral language, and will follow procedures in line with international parliamentary practice.

The new standing orders will be reviewed when Parliament sits next week.

The last time the standing order rules were reviewed was in 2010.

Clerk of Parliament, Tangata Vainerere said the standing orders do not lapse at the end of a parliamentary session, but remain in effect until the House decides to suspend, change or repeal them.

Vainerere said the new standing orders will substantially re-organise and update the current standing orders.

The new orders will also reduce unnecessary detail and resolve conflicting or overlapping provisions, be reordered in a more logical way to make the rules easier to navigate and more understandable, he said.

Vainerere said it would also address particular concerns raised during the standing order committee workshops and consultation process in 2020 and 2021.

He said it is proposed that the new standing orders will come into effect during the first Parliament Sitting of 2022 which will be in around February.

But Vainerere said the date is yet to be determined by Parliament.
