Family reunion in Aitutaki ends on a high

Members of the Matauia Family Reunion who travelled to Aitutaki for the Bi-Centennial celebrations have returned to Rarotonga exhilarated and with many precious memories.

Patron or ‘paterono’ of the Matauia family Papa Willie John said: “We were honoured to represent our motherland Palmerston Island in the 200 years Gospel Celebrations programme activities designated for each island’s participation.”

“It was a memorable and a historical experience for our family to observe and participate in - one that would be talked about and shared with others for many years,” said John.

The Matauia family had set out on their trip to meet and make new acquaintances and build relationships with other members of the late William Marsters and Matauia descendants from Aitutaki.

There were happy and hilarious times of sharing stories, singing and new friendships forged and the wonderful hospitality, not only from the Matauia family in Aitutaki but also the people of Araura Enua and the caring and loving hosting village people of Reureu te Mata o Teerui.

The Tu’oro’oro/welcome challenges that were accorded to the family on arrival and at the various functions in the presence of the Ariki Vaine Teurukura Tiura of Reureu Oire, Mataiapo and dignitaries of Aitutaki, “filled us with feelings of joy and impressions of love, comfort, peace and harmony,” said John.

“We had a great time in Aitutaki, our many thanks and appreciation go out to our hosting families in Reureu who provided us with A class accommodation and nutritious food day after day, at the Rangi-pae-tai/Rangi-pae-uta Hall,” he added.

“President Ioane Tumii of the Matauia family and his wife Meleaone, and the Pedryn families in Aitutaki gave such incredible assistance and service to our reunion programme, we appreciate their invaluable support,” said John.
