Tepare o Nga-Ariki-Tokoa Ngatokorua Solomona welcomed the guests with a traditional chant that was followed by a message conveyed by a representative from each of the groups.
Frozen and dry goods donated by the islands of Nga-Pu-Toru – Mauke, Mitiaro and Atiu – and Mangaia for the Aitutaki Bi-Centennial Celebrations, were received by the mayor of the island Tekura Bishop and Tamatoa Ariki Teao Tangaroa.
Te Putokotoko o Tamatoa Ariki Kiikoro-i-te-maru-o-te-Ao, Arerau Maao delivered a strong message of acknowledgement to each of the groups.
Bishop and the Bi-Centennial Celebrations organising committee chairman Pastor Charlie Taamo were delighted to receive the produce from the visiting Pa Enua.
“We were overwhelmed to receive these goods on behalf of the people of Aitutaki – a measure of love and appreciation and a wonderful gesture from the Pa Enua,” said Bishop.
“This custom of giving is in line with our traditions and the food will assist the host villages with their catering.”
Bishop was also grateful for the support received from other government departments and Infrastructure Cook Islands office in Aitutaki.
Visitors from Rarotonga and the Pa Enua who are on the island for the event have praised the hospitality and efforts of the people of Aitutaki as hosts of this historic occasion.
The joyful spirit of the people on Aitutaki was evident on Monday as people prepared for the Gospel Day celebrations that started at 5am yesterday (Tuesday).
The strong sense of pride and faith in Christianity by the people on the island in having reached such a milestone of 200 years of the arrival of the Gospel is apparent in the heart-warming and elated smiles all around.
