Cook Islands Tertiary Training Institute (CITTI) is running Japanese cooking classes to mark a decade of diplomatic relations between the Cook Islands and Japan.

Culinary arts tutor, Karlene Taokia helped run the classes with Kana Daniels.

She said the course showcased beyond just the tastes of Japan and participants had a chance to learn about the culture as well, through learning Japanese words and prayers.

So far three sessions have taken place with three more to go.

Taokia said so far participants have learnt to make teriyaki chicken, nukujaga (beef stew), sauces and sunomono, which is a vinegary cucumber side dish.

Taokia said she had positive feedback from students.

Each course is three hours and is $20 a session.
