The Prince of Wales Athletics Day is still a few weeks away, but young athletes are already gearing up and preparing for their relay races, long jumps, sprints, and more.

Over ten kids from the ages of 9-13 years came down to the National Stadium yesterday to take part in day one of the after school training programme held by Athletics Cook Islands.

The programme is aimed at helping primary school children prepare for the Prince of Wales Athletics Day which will take place on September 29.

Ruth Mave, secretary for Athletics Cook Islands, led the training session, taking the kids through some warm up activities to activate their muscles, followed by some sprinting exercises, long jump runs and more.

The training programme will run every Monday and Wednesday from 3pm to 4pm under the Track and Field Club.

It is open to anyone who wants to further their athletics training, they can join the club by paying a $15 fee.

“This whole thing is done to develop athletics on the island so anyone is welcome to make it an after school thing even once Prince of Wales is done,” said Mave.
