Rainy weather is set to give way to sun this coming weekend, Cook Islands Meteorological Service Director Arona Ngari says.

Ngari said the weather is expected to be clear for Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday.

Rarotonga experienced 37.5 millimetres of rain from August 15 to 23.

Ngari said 24.3 millimetres of that fell on Monday while gusts of 36 knots were also reported.

Ngari said Rarotonga has had 131.1 millimetres of rain this month, over 16 millimetres above the average August rainfall of 112 millimetres.

The Southern Cook Islands would continue to experience above average rainfall into September and October, while the Northern group will experience below and normal rainfall, he said.

Rarotonga has experienced multiple heavy downpours this month.

On August 12 a flood warning was issued and Air New Zealand flights were diverted back to New Zealand due to wild weather.

On August 2, 48.3 millimetres of rain fell in 24 hours, nearly half the month’s average rain.
