The Turtles Domestic Cricket League tournament got off to a quick start on Saturday with the Royal Heats wasting no time in disposing of the Super Kings in the three-team tournament.

What was meant to be a long lazy day of 50 over cricket turned out to be an action-packed match leading some to wonder if it was a Twenty/20 game.

The Super Kings led by Apii Mamanu opted to bat first but wickets fell too easily with Vane Tangimetua’s Royal Heat team really putting the heat on the batting side.

Campbell Hockin did well to try and steady the King’s fast sinking ship scoring 18 runs from 60 deliveries but the Heats bowlers were too fired-up on the day.

The Heats’ super bowler Davis Teinaki was one of the stand out players in the match taking three wickets in nine overs which included three maidens (no runs conceded).

Fellow gun bowler Wayken Punga also took three wickets, including two maidens, from six overs. Tom Wicks once again showed class beyond his age taking three wickets from just 1.4 overs.

Thomas Teinaki also got in on the action to take one wicket.

The Super Kings were all bowled out for 60 runs in just the 23 overs leaving a small target for the Royal Heats to chase.

And it didn’t take long for the fired up Heats to achieve the target with the national pairing of captain Vane Tangimetua and Davis Teinaki racking up the 61 runs in just eight overs to take the first win of the new tournament.

With a game under their belt, future games are expected to be tougher with the Storm Chasers led by Ronnie Forbes yet to show what they are made of. Their first outing is scheduled for this weekend.

Despite the quick game, the day was hailed a success, starting with a moving rendition of the national anthem by the Royal Heats’ Kori Patia at the start of the day’s activities.
