Big field gathers for Hugh Henry tourney

Although the official Rarotonga golf season has not yet started, one of the most popular golf tournaments is due to be held this Saturday.

This is the Hugh Henry Memorial Golf Tournament.

The Henry family have sponsored this tournament for many years now and it always draws a large field of entrants.

The draw for Saturday is filling up fast, so if you want to take part be sure to visit the Rarotonga Golf Club as soon as possible and pick your tee time from those that are left.

The Classic Pairs competition is well under way with four teams on 8 or more points while some are still on zero.

They have been concentrating on beating the people they are playing with but for the Hugh Henry they will have to concentrate more on beating the course.

Business House golf still continues and we are now getting to the final rounds.

It has been a great pleasure during the last few weeks to see some of our young golfers back on the island, including ‘golden girl’ Elmay Viking, on a break from Brisbane, and William and Rotana Howard back for a spell from New Zealand.

All three have improved their golf and it shows in the maturity displayed on the course. We all wish them well and will watch their golfing prowess grow with great interest.

In last Saturday’s sweep competition, William Howard showed his mastery of the course by carding a 67 off the stick – this was despite a double bogey on the 12th.

Meanwhile Elmay had a great round to card a 75 and be the best of the ladies and Rotana, after a shaky start, still managed an 80.

Club manager Haimona Browne tore the course apart on handicap by coming in with a +8 in this bogey competition – he won’t be on a 12 handicap this Saturday.

I hope to see all members on Saturday for the Hugh Henry Memorial Tournament and remember that the colours for the day are red and white.

Meitaki maata once again to the Henry family for their sponsorship of this popular competition.

Good luck to all golfers.
