Titikaveka College students have been taking charge of the PE days at school as part of their NCEA assessments.
Year 11 physical education students have spent this term studying an inter-personal skills unit with emphasis on communication.
Every Friday the school spends the afternoon playing sports organised by the year 11 students.
Yesterday sports included Rippa rugby, coconut netball, dodge ball and one touch.
The coconut netball game was a hilarious game which follows similar rules to netball except that the goal is replaced by a team member standing on a chair with the aim of the game being to get the ball into the hands of the ‘goalie’.
The year 11 students will be assessed on how they run the weekly sports programme and at best they will receive five NCEA credits.
The students dedicated yesterday’s sports day to their mate Aratoa Mana who is battling leukemia in New Zealand.
The theme of the day was ‘fair play and encouragement’.
Titikaveka College PE teacher Rachelle Owen-Cooper says her students have come up with some new fun sports games for the school to challenge the kids to use a variation of skills. She says that yesterday’s sports day wasn’t about winning or losing.
