Training a hit

Over 40 female cricketers took advantage of a Telecom Women’s High Performance session on Tuesday run by two former New Zealand women’s cricketers Delwyn Costello and Catherine Campbell.

Costello and Campbell, who have five world cup appearances between them, drew on their experience as they took players through some of the finer skills of the game, including running between the wickets and judging quick singles.

Prior to the course Costello and Campbell had observed several local matches.

“I have been impressed by the natural athleticism and the skills the women have acquired in such a short time playing the game” said Campbell.

Campbell, who works for New Zealand Cricket and is on the International Cricket Council regional advisory panel, said that women’s cricket around the world is growing, and that it was positive to see women’s cricket in the Cook Islands growing at such a fast rate.

Costello said that the experience of representing your country at international cricket is a great honour and with ever increasing opportunities for women to play international cricket she encourages all aspiring cricketers to train smart so they too could experience the thrill of representing their nation at cricket.
