Conditions don’t deter young sailors

Choppy conditions and a stiff breeze did not deter junior sailors at Muri on Saturday, as they navigated a set course to raise funds for the Cook Islands national sailing championships being held in Aitutaki this week.

The group of eight managed a combined tally of 66 laps of the lagoon course, before being lured ashore by a sausage sizzle lunch.

Sponsors included the local Hash House Harriers, which supported its own “hash kids” with a generous donation on the day, organiser Tony Heays said.

In total $1200 was raised.

The junior sailors travelled to Aitutaki for the championships on Sunday, with Ngaoa Moore accompanying as coach, manager, cook, and driver.

The annual competition started yesterday and finishes on Saturday.

Sailors in the championships include Eseta, Maeva, Jordan, Sam, Josiah, Arii, Ioane, Anuerin and Gigi.
