Mixed netball team Thort it was a Disco were crowned the champions of the inaugural social mixed netball tournament on Wednesday night after a thrilling finals match against the Jagar Bombs.

The disco boys and girls never looked like losing the match with their lethal goal defending duo of national netballer Luciana Matenga and international beach volleyball player Brendon Heath keeping the Jagar Bombs from scoring in the first quarter.

Thort it was a Disco shooters Moari Allsworth and Mati Toru scored just two goals for their team in the first quarter – but it gave them the early lead and edge over the Jagar Bombs.

The Jagar Bombs finally potted two goals in the second quarter with the disco team adding four more goals to their tally to stretch their lead out to 6-2.

The third quarter was chaotic as both teams pulled out all the stops and players threw their bodies on the line, literally, to gain the edge.

Mid-quarter battles were impressive but the action was always in the shooting circle.

The Jagar Bombs had the better game in the quarter through gutsy shooters Tupa Tupa and Odile Pauka who held their own against Heath and Matenga in the shooting circle.

Although the Jagar Bombs only managed to notch up two more goals – they also prevented the disco team to just two goals for a final second quarter score of 8-4 and setting the stage for an intense final quarter.

The Jagar Bombs must have had a booster in their water as they threw everything they had at the disco team scoring three goals and hold the disco side to just one goal in the final quarter.

But the last 7 minute quarter wasn’t enough time for the Jagar Bombs to catch up as they went down 9-7 to Thort it was a Disco.

The match for 3rd and 4th was a vocal affair between team Seamakes and Centa Jaguars.

The final quarter of the match was a goal for goal affair igniting tempers on both sides.

But it was the Semakes that edged out the Centa Jaguars 15-14 to take out third place.

The tournament was set up to encourage exercise and healthy living and this was certainly achieved.

The domestic netball competition is expected to be of higher standard from early on thanks to the social netball tournament which saw a number of club premier and reserve grade players use the tournament as a pre season warm up.

The tournament wrapped up with a closing ceremony and party at the Staircase Restaurant and Bar where the disco boys and girls were in their element.
