Sportswoman of the year nominee Kelly Pick recently returned from New Caledonia where she was invited to race in the 25th anniversary Noumea international triathlon on May 9.

Pick was chosen by the Cook Islands Triathlon Association to represent the Cook Islands at the event. She was thrilled with the opportunity even though the race was a mere eight days after she finished the gruelling Rarotonga international triathlon as the first local woman home.

Pick lined up alongside some of the world’s best triathletes including top Kiwi ironwoman Joanna Lawn and ironman Cameron Brown.

And as Pick has done on some many occasions she did the Cooks proud, crossing the line as the eighth woman overall.

She was first in her age group and first age grouper home in a time of 02.18.19 the first seven women across the line were in the elite category.

Pick reports that the race was a huge experience with the biggest lesson learnt was “know the course really well before you race”.

She said the crowd support was awesome and so was the organisation of the event with the Cook Islands flag among those fluttering in wind in honour of the global athletes that took part.

“All in all it was a fantastic experience and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to do it and be able to represent the Cook Islands.”
