Cowboys retain Powerade trophy

In a match worthy of a grand final the Cowboys under 16 squad were able to repel, as expected, a very strong Avatiu Eels challenge to win the battle 21-18.

The halftime score was 7-6 in favour of the Cowboys.

In a match that saw the lead change several times the Cowboys were just able to outlast a fast-finishing Eels team.

The Cowboys forward pack lead by strong running Number 8 Robert Heather supported by nuggety hooker Ives Obeda were the pick of the bunch with the obvious game plan (in typical Cowboys tradition!) to play a direct and short game often exploring attacking options on the fringes of the ruck and maul.

This nullified the dangerous Eels backline with the triple threat posed by the Eels inside and midfield backs of Marcelo Rairoa, Basil Matapo, Nigel Hoeflich and Stanley Tobia who were unable to find any rhythm as the Cowboys defenders kept them in check for the majority of the match.

Arorangi tries came via Nathaniel Tairi (2), Ives Obeda with conversion chipped in by Tiaarn Mataroa (3).

Avatiu tries were scored by Steven Hiro, Basil Matapo with Nigel Hoeflich kicking the conversions plus two penalties.

Compliments to both teams and management for a fine display of rugby and to the hosts the Arorangi Rugby Club for dressing the grounds.

Post match presentations took place with all participants receiving sponsors products via the CITC Sales Manager (and local rugby legend) George George who congratulated both teams and also offered words of encouragement to our aspiring rugby players.

George also stated that Powerade will continue their sponsorship of this mid-week challenge which is great for local development.
