Four new records

The master’s athletics concluded an enjoyable annual championship last Tuesday afternoon with an exciting 4 x 100m mixed relay.

The champs started last Saturday afternoon in light rain with the hammer throw event, a 3000m walk, the triple jump and the 60m sprints.

On Monday afternoon the throwers were again busy with the shot put being held and an additional 60m dash was run.

The meeting concluded on Tuesday afternoon with the long jump, discus, javelin, 100m and 400m run. Several athletes dressed up for the occasion which added some laughs during the competition.

Joining the Rarotongan based athletes was Tui Ashe from Auckland who participated in the women’s 55 group.

Highlights of the meeting were four new records by two athletes.

Paul Allsworth in the men’s 50 age grade set a new record in the 60m dash with a time of 7.9s 60m and a 100m sprint record of 13.6s.

Takau Moekaa set a new record in the women’s 55 age grade division with a 7.72m shot put throw and a 21.07m throw in the discus.

There were also excellent efforts from Ali Napa in the javelin, Tamarua Herman and Mona Henderson in the discus.

These champs are the first step towards the next Oceania Champs to be held in Tauranga, New Zealand, in February 2012 and anyone interested in joining the group to New Zealand should advise one of the Masters Committee – David Lobb, Steve Whitta, Ali Napa, Kevin Henderson or Len Edwards as soon as possible.
