Tennis players post mixed results

The two Team Cook Islands tennis players have posted mixed results in their first two days of competition at the Pacific Games.

Brittany Teei beat her Vanuatu opponent in straight sets 6-3 6-4 in Kone, a northern province in New Caledonia, during her first match on Sunday (Cook Islands time).

Tennis manager June Baudinet said Teei was up against a strong player in the hot weather, but she was able to knock through a number of aces to help her cause.

Teammate Davina Hosking lost her match, despite dominating in the first set and coming agonisingly close to clinching the third.

She played really well during the first set then the Vanuatu girl picked up her game, Baudinet said. Davina was up 4-1 in the third set and she lost five games in a row.

Hosking finished the match 6-1 3-6 4-6.

Both players lost their second-round matches yesterday, Cook Islands time, to Papua New Guinean opponents, Hosking going down 1-6, 3-6 and Teei losing 1-6 2-6. Baudinet said the team was enjoying its time in Kone, which she said was less stressful than the capital Noumea.

A local chief welcomed the players to Kone with gifts and a small meal.
