Swamp welcomes gunslinging Cowboys

Rivalry is a word thrown around a lot, but it certainly isn’t overused when it comes to describing two teams facing off this weekend.

An historically intense rivalry exists between the Avatiu Eels and the Arorangi Cowboys. The Cowboys have started unusually slow this season, losing their last two matches – 9-14 against the Bulls and a 16-32 loss to the Panthers – to head into the match with a 50 percent record.

The Cowboys’ biggest weapon – their intimidating forward pack – have underperformed so far this season and will need a big match to overcome the Eels’ slippery attack.

Despite losing one game, the Eels are certainly feeling confident after overcoming the defending champion Panthers 33-23 last weekend and are ensuring the fans who flock to the Swamp are being rewarded.

The Eels will be relying on heavily experienced first five-eighths Terry Piri for his direction on the field, while the Lui and Clive Nicholas will ensure their forward pack that has surprised many this year continues to flourish. Expect lock Mark Charlie to also make a presence and lineout time and ensure they lay the foundations for the backs to attack.

Captain David Heather has been leading from the front for the Cowboys and will need to direct his troops if they are to pose a problem for the slick Eels. Hard-working lock Mike Crouch and 18-year-old fullback Nathaneil Tairi are also two to watch throughout the match.
