Minister of Sport Mark Brown will be accompanying the Cook Islands Olympic team to the London Olympics.

Brown will arrive in London with the national team and will attend the opening ceremony as one of the expected 200 sports ministers who will be in attendance at the showcase event.

With the closing ceremony expected to finish at 1am London time, Brown will then travel with the management team to Weymouth to watch Helema Williams compete in her sailing event.

In what promises to be a hectic schedule of events, the minister will attempt to file a story each day (with pictures) to the local media in order to give locals a more personal sense of the games than what they will see on TV.

He will only be at the Olympic Games for a week before returning to Rarotonga. This will be the minister’s first time at a major sports event in his capacity as Minister of Sport.

”As a former national representative, it is a privilege to travel with the team. I am so very proud that our team will fly our flag at the Olympic Games. This is a young team and there is no reason for them not to aim for the next Olympics as well, which will be held in Rio de Janiero in 2016,“ he said.

The minister will be accompanied by his wife, Daphne, who is a former national rep and Pacific Games gold medallist.
