Future track stars from Rarotonga primary schools will take over the synthetic and grass tracks at the BCI Stadium for the annual Prince of Wales athletics competition.

Today we share this photo of track champions of yesteryear, Mii Akanoa-Kermode and William Cowan of Arorangi School.

The photo of the speedy pair was taken on June 2, 1953 in Muri after they were crowned junior champions of the Rarotonga inter-school Morgan Shield athletics day – the same year their Arorangi School won the shield.

Today, Rarotonga primary school students will be competing for the Prince of Wales shield currently held by Avarua School.

The competition starts at 8 o’clock this morning with an opening prayer before each school team show off their team unity with the marching parade before hitting the tracks.

Meitaki maata to William Cowan for sharing this memory lane photo.
