The Avatiu Eels and Arorangi Cowboys have a long history in being local club rivals and this Saturday – it will be the two clubs youngest stars that play for club pride in the under 14 grand finals.

These two champion club teams have met three times this season with the Eels winning twice during the round competition however the Cowboys were able to win the all-important major semi’s two weeks ago. In that all important match – the Cowboys beat the Eels 22-15.

This was the Eels first time in two years that they have suffered defeat. Could that be the medicine that the doctor ordered pre-finals?

Last week the Eels disposed of a spirited Dragons team 29-15 to win their way back into contention for this weekend’s finals.

Standouts for the Eels all season have been speedy fullback Mark Leito, barnstorming midfielder Doom Ponini and his partner Joshua Motu along with skilful halfback Rechimaer Rairoa. Best for the Cowboys this season have been the try scoring pair of fullback James Strickland and winger Taoa Vaevaemaki, nippy halfback Kayal Iro, busy number 8 Tanire Mokoroa and hard-working prop Toru Arona.

The Eels will need to bring their A game if they are to defend their 2012 champions title.
