A whopping 365.2kg of fish was caught during the Avana Fishing Club competition on Saturday September 7 with 19 boats registered for the event.

It wasn’t beyond comprehension for angler Ricky who reeled in the heaviest fish of the day – a 25.8kg wahoo caught on board vessel ‘Beyond Comprehension’.

Second place went to Nga from vessel NJ with a 19.6kg wahoo with Ricky taking out third with a second fish – a 18.4kg wahoo.

Wayne of Speedy Gas had the heaviest haul of fish to win the aggregate division with a total of 61.2kg of fish while Pa on Samy Boy caught a total of 58kg and Brendon Nicholas on Dawnbreaker caught 36kg to take out third place.

Trader Don took out all 3 prizes in the tuna section while Ricky and Nga shared all three prizes in the wahoo section and Nga, Jubilee (on Yellow Fin) and Brendan took out the mahimahi section. Master fishermen Pupuke Robati and Captain Moko (Steven Kavana) had to fight it out for the other species with Pupuke winning with a 2.2kg skippy and Moko came 2nd with a 1.4kg Amberjack.

Captain Moko also took out the smallest fish category with a .4kg Amberjack.

Organisers of the event said it was most encouraging to see the smaller boat owners entering the comp and to everyone’s delight they featured strongly in the major prizes.
