NOUMEA – A heavy rain warning has been issued for much of New Caledonia as the territory is hit by a tropical depression now to its northwest.

An orange alert will be in force until midday today for the northern and central parts of the main island as well as the Loyalty Island group.

About 200 millimetres of rain is expected over a 12-hour period, with about 300 millimetres falling during the event.

Civil defence is advising people to minimise travel and keep listening out for weather updates. People are also advised to stay away from trees because of possible lightning strikes.
